Special House Concert

I had no idea the family members with cameras were professional caliber photographers until my wife discovered the photos in the pages of my hometown paper, The Highlander. Here’s what happened. A few months ago a Burnet County fan called about booking for her husband’s surprise birthday party.  Usually for private parties we play music as folks are socializing and mingling so that’s what I expected from her, but she said emphatically that she didn’t want me to start until after the guests were served dinner, barbecue from nearby Spikes in Kingsland. She wanted a sit-down, listening situation—a house concert. That’s what we, Luiz Coutinho de Souza on percussion, Chris Reeves on Spanish guitar, and myself, gave them this past Saturday. The birthday boy set the tone for the evening by taking his reserved chair right in front of the band with his cold beverage in hand and politely focusing his attention on the music, making numerous requests of my original compositions including “Home Made of Stone.”  This house concert ranks high on my list of favorite shows I’ve ever done. “My husband John will be talking about this magical night for the rest of his life,” said Diane Davis as we were leaving Lake Buchanan.
